Mechrey Floating Village
The Great Lake and its annual flood are the lifeblood of Cambodia. During the dry season much of the Great Lake drains into the Mekong River, leaving behind a much smaller lake, but as the rains start to come and the snow melt from Tibet flood the plains, the Tonle Sap river reverses its flow and fills the lake. Within a few months the once dry lands flood with water, and life on and around the lake changes dramatically.
This private trip takes you to a lesser visited part of the lake system, to the village of Mechrey. Your guide will bring this incredible natural phenomenon to life and enable you to interact with the people who making their lives from the lake in a respectful and meaningful way. This is a great chance to witness one of Cambodias and the worlds most amazing natural wonders
Half Day Private Mechrey Tour (5 hours)
Best Times to visit from August until the end of February
Recommended Departure times 7am or 1 pm
| 7am / 1pm | Depart from Siem Reap and journey out to the edge of the lake system. |
| 7.30am / 1.30pm | We jump out of our transport and walk the last few hundred meters to the boat dock through the local village. This is a great opportunity to see the stilted homes that line the roadway. |
| 7.45am / 1.45pm | We board the boat and head out to the village of Mechrey, along the way learn about the Tonle Sap lake system and the people who live on the lake. |
| After journeying around the village we swap our large boat for small dug out wooden canoes. These will be rowed by local villagers who directly benefit receiving income from each tour. In the smaller boats we have a greater chance of spotting some of the birds that inhabit the lake system including Cormorants, Darters, Egrets and Chinese Herons. | |
| morning / afternoon tea | We find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy some tropical fruit and take in the surrounds |
| We visit a local families home and learn a little abut living on the lake system and how families eek out an income from fishing and the lake. We also provide the family with a small gift of rice. | |
| 11am / 5pm | We end our time on the lake and head back to Siem Reap. |
